Urban HEAT

Growing cities and shrinking cities need healthy relationships with natural systems to support the wellbeing of all their community members.

Extreme Heat is the deadliest type of weather event in the world. In cities, where extreme heat and humidity events are intensified by large built-up areas, vulnerable communities are at even greater risk for health complications and mortality from high heat events.

Cooling solutions can be developed to support at-risk populations in cities through built shade structures, greening strategies and planning mechanisms that provide ready-access to cooling centers.

Building natural-material systems to support cooling, reduce flooding and and increase bio-diversity are scalable strategies that can be implemented by neighborhoods, larger communities and regions.
